2008 BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF THE TWIN CITIES AWARDS TOP MEMBERS AT GALA EVENT

At a red carpet gala on Saturday, October 25th, the Builders Association of the Twin Cities (BATC) honored award-winning builders and associate members for excellence in home building. Held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown St. Paul and hosted by sportscaster, Mark Rosen, the evening showcased the best work of local builders and associate members of BATC.

BATC revamped its awards programs this year by combining all of its construction awards into one program, and adding several new categories, including green building, sales and marketing honors. Award categories and winners are listed below.

REGGIE AWARDSSM

The Reggie AwardsSM, which stand for Registered Builder, were created in 1968 to recognize outstanding achievement by member builders in the design, quality and value of their homes. Participating builders entered their best homes for judging during the 2008 Parade of Homes Fall?ShowcaseSM.

The entries were divided into one association-maintained home category and 14 single-family home categories divided by price ranges. Armed with comprehensive judging forms, four industry professionals visited each of the homes in their category. Judges examined the homes, rating a variety of aspects of each home’s design and construction quality and value. Once all the homes have been viewed, the four judges met together to discuss the scores and select the winning entry.

“The Reggie AwardSM is the most prestigious award a local builder can take home,” explains K.C. Chermak, 2008 president of the Builders Association of the Twin Cities and owner of Pillar Homes Partner, Inc. “Being selected as best by your peers who critically assess every inch of your home, is truly an honor.”

TRILLIUM AWARDSSM

The Trillium AwardsSM recognize excellence in design and construction within five home component categories: Best Exterior, Best Interior Design/Layout, Best Kitchen, Best Bath and Best Special Area. The Trillium AwardsSM are designed to honor the partnership between the builder and supporting companies that provide products, labor and materials, so each winner will include both the builder and at least one of the associate members instrumental in creating the winning home.

All of the entries were divided into price ranges, with a panel of building industry peers completing a comprehensive score sheet after visiting each of the homes within their category. Subsequently, each judging team met in person to discuss the merits of the homes they visited prior to determining the winner.

PEOPLES CHOICE AWARD

In its seventh year, the Peoples Choice Award was created in response to requests by member builders to create a way to judge consumers’ reactions to their Parade HomesSM. While the Reggie AwardsSM honor the homes that builders find to be best, that doesn’t always translate into what the general public likes most. Builders have also told us that they’ve found visitors are sometimes uncomfortable telling the builder or agent what they like or don’t like about a particular model.

The Peoples Choice Awards began with a short questionnaire that visitors used to rate the home compared to their ”ideal” home for the price. The questionnaire asked visitors to rate eight aspects of the home (exterior, curb appeal; interior, floor plan/layout; kitchen; bathrooms; bedrooms; other indoor spaces; site orientation, decks, porches; and construction quality) on a five point scale, as well as to complete two open-ended questions (what did you like best? and what should be improved ).

Each of the participating Parade HomesSM received 500 postage-paid postcards which were made available to visitors. To participate as a judge, consumers simply completed the postcard and dropped it in the mail. The postcards were tallied, and the top scoring home within six price ranges received a Peoples Choice Award.

GREEN BUILDING AND REMODELING AWARDS new in 2008
Green construction is a rapidly growing segment of the home building and remodeling industry. As such, BATC has added a new award to honor excellence in Green building. Entrants submitted several photographs and a comprehensive description of their home or remodeling project. They were also asked to submit a short description of their company’s green philosophy, how they worked to raise awareness of green building techniques and materials on the job site, as well as key green features the used. Judges, including members of the BATC Green Committee and Mike Williams, Executive Director of MN GreenStar, carefully reviewed all materials and selected the best entrant in each category.

Judged by sales and marketing professionals, the entered web sites were reviewed for design and layout, functionality, and appropriateness for the market by a panel of industry marketing specialists. One winning website was selected.

Associate Sales Person of the Year
Nominated BATC Associate sales representatives (from companies which sell products and services to home builders and remodelers) were judged by sales and marketing professionals on submissions that included written overview of sales presentations and follow-up processes as well as a statement by a sponsor which could be a client or supervisor. One winner was selected.
