BATC Carpentry Training Program

The Builders Association of the Twin Cities (BATC) and the Minnesota chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) are pleased to jointly offer a Carpentry Training Program.

The program will be offering the Modern Carpentry Curriculum course content. It runs for 12 weeks, 11 will be evenings 6-9 pm, plus one eight-hour session. Student time is split between classroom and hands-on training. The cost is $350 per level (includes instructor, manuals and materials). (Employees cannot take two levels at a time.)

Level 1: Every Monday, September 15 - December 1, 2008

The Level 1 course is designed for the inexperienced apprentice with less than one year of construction experience. Units to be covered include Green Building Basics and the units listed below:

Unit 1 • Orientation to the Trade. This unit will examine carpentry as a career path, expectation of employers and the construction industry. Plus, a brief overview of MN GreenStar, a new certification program for green homes and remodeling.

Unit 2 • Job Site Safety. This unit will review a general safety policy that includes fall protection, use of P.P.E., working on roofs and general safety. The unit will be integrated within other units.

Unit 3 • Building Materials and Fasteners. This unit will examine the most common used building materials in the industry, (i.e. dimension lumber, sheet goods, treated lumber, engineered lumber, etc.) and will have a guest speaker on engineered products.

Unit 4 • Power and Pneumatic Tools. This unit will examine the safe operation and accessories to power and pneumatic tools. This unit will be integrated within other units.

Unit 5 • Floor Framing. This unit will expose the student to terminology, fastening requirements, and installation methods of a floor system.

Unit 6 • Basic Wall and Ceiling Framing. This unit will examine basic wall layout, i.e. stud spacing, window and door rough openings, framing continuity, and terminology.

Unit 7 • Hand Tools and Leveling Instruments. Students will learn various types of hand tools and their proper use.

Unit 8 • Construction Math. This unit will verify the student competencies in the use of a standard ruler. Students will also learn certain mathematical concepts such as working with fractions, calculation of area and perimeter, calculation of a hypotenuse.

Unit 9 • Basic Roof Framing. Students will learn how to hand frame and apply sheathing to a simple gable roof system. The student will also learn hand frame terminology.

Unit 10 • Cornice and Exterior Trim. Students will learn cornice and exterior trim terminology and application method.

Unit 11 • Roof Coverings. Students will learn standard roofing products, application methods, and flashing techniques.


Level 3: Every Tuesday, September 16 - December 2, 2008

The Level 3 course is designed for the carpenter with 2-4 years of experience. Emphasis will be placed on advanced roof framing, intermediate wall framing, deck construction, stair building and blueprint reading.

Unit 1 • Intermediate Wall Framing. In this unit, the student will learn how to construct box bays, build angle walls and special detailed framing.

Unit 2 • Advanced Roof Framing. In this unit, the student will learn how to construct a bay roof, build dormers and frame an octagon roof.

Unit 3 • Stair Construction. In this all day class, the student will learn about the different types of stairs, code requirements and stair framing construction.

Unit 4 • Blueprint Reading. This class is designed so the student will learn knowledge in print reading for residential construction.

Unit 5 • Deck Construction. In this class, students will learn about the different building materials, codes, flashing techniques and footing requirements for deck construction.

Unit 6 • Remodeling Fundamentals. Safety tips, applicable building codes and tool use.

Unit 7 • MN GreenStar. An overview of the program.


Level 2: Every Monday, January 5 - March 23, 2009

The Level 2 course is designed for the carpenter with 1-3 years of experience. The emphasis is placed on exterior finish and intermediate roof framing.

Unit 1 • Exterior Wall Finish. This unit will instruct the students on installation of fiber cement siding, house wrap, and corner details.

Unit 2 • Windows and Exterior Doors. This unit will examine code requirements, proper green building techniques with installing/replacing windows and doors.

Unit 3 • Manufactured Roof Trusses. This unit will teach terminology, installation, and bracing of wood built roof trusses for a gable and hip roof system. Tour Truss plant.

Unit 4 • Roof Design. This unit will enable the student how to comprehend/design a roof plan and calculate a hand-framed roof.

Unit 5 • Intermediate Roof Framing. This unit will have the student
construct a hand-framed hip roof system from knowledge acquired in the roof design unit.

Unit 6 • Introduction to Roof Framing Square. This unit will teach the student rafter calculations using the table on the framing square.


Level 4: Every Tuesday, January 6 - March 24, 2009

The Level 4 course is designed for the carpenter with 3+ years of experience with an emphasis on building codes and interior finish.

Unit 1 • Energy Efficient Construction. This class is designed to examine the local energy codes and how they impact locally and how they impact MN GreenStar.

Unit 2 • Building Codes. This class is designed to give the student knowledge in code enforcement and understanding of the International Residential CodeTM (IRC).

Unit 3 • Structural Construction. This class is designed to give the student
a practical understanding of proper header sizes, spans, and building
material characteristics.

Unit 4 • Cabinet Installation. The student will learn cabinet terminology,
sizes and on-site installation practices.

Unit 5 • Interior Trim. The student will learn how to install base, casing,
crown molding and interior doors. This class will include one all day session.


Deadline to register for Levels 1 & 3 is Wednesday, Sept. 10th, 2008.
Deadline to register for Levels 2 & 4 is Friday, Dec. 19th, 2008.
